NEDERLANDSE BIOGRAFIE

Boris Paval Conen (1968) is regisseur en scenarioschrijver. Na zijn afstuderen aan de Nederlandse Filmacademie in 1993 maakte hij zijn afstudeerfilm Horror Vacui - een visueel opvallend, dialoogloos werk dat de Tuschinski Award voor Beste Studentenfilm won. In de loop der jaren regisseerde hij meerdere speelfilms, televisieseries en dansfilms, waaronder Car Men en Between Entrance and Exit in samenwerking met choreograaf Jiří Kylián. Beide dansfilms werden 
internationaal vertoond en wonnen meerdere prijzen, waaronder de Prix Italia.
Conen voelt zich aangetrokken tot meeslepende en maatschappelijk betrokken verhalen, waarin hij de complexe, vaak
ongemakkelijke grijstinten van morele dilemma’s onderzoekt. Deze aanpak heeft geleid tot originele en onderscheidende televisieproducties; waaronder de serie De 9 Dagen van de Gier (2001), de Telefilm Exit (2013), en de Telefilm Kamp Holland (2013). Hiermee won hij twee keer een Gouden Kalf voor Beste Televisiedrama en nominaties voor grote Europese prijzen zoals de Rose d’Or en Prix Europa.
De laatste jaren richt hij zich steeds meer op karaktergedreven drama. Zijn nieuwste speelfilm, Laatste Ronde, ging in mei 2024 in première in de bioscopen en volgt jeugdvrienden in hun zestiger jaren terwijl zij omgaan met ouder worden, loyaliteit en de veranderende fasen van het leven.
Dit jaar is de apocalyptische Telefilm Please Try Again Later  (in co-regie met de debuterende jonge regisseur Rosa Kreulen) op 31 januari uitgezonden door de NTR op NPO3.

Boris Paval Conen (1968) is a Dutch filmmaker and screenwriter. After graduating from the Netherlands Film Academy in 1993, he made his graduation film Horror Vacui; a visually striking, dialogue-free work that won the Award for Best Student Film. Over the years, he has directed numerous feature films, television series, and dance films, including Car Men and Between Entrance and Exit, created with choreographer Jiří Kylián. Both films were shown internationally and received several awards. Conen is drawn to compelling and socially engaged storytelling, exploring the complex, often uncomfortable shades of gray within moral dilemmas.
This approach has led to original and distinctive work for television, including the film Exit, the series De 9 days of the vulture (9 Dagen van de Gier), and Kamp Holland, which won two Golden Calves for Best Television Drama and received nominations for major European awards such as the Rose d’Or and Prix Europa.
In recent years, his focus has shifted increasingly toward character-driven drama. His latest feature film, Last Call (Laatste Ronde), premiered in cinemas in May 2024 and follows childhood friends in their sixties as they navigate aging, loyalty, and the changing phases of life.
His recently completed apocalyptic television film Please Try Again Later - together with the debuting young director Rosa Kreulen - is  broadcasted on Dutch television at the end of January this year
